Description
Mars surface. Panoramic image of the Martian surface and the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit on 8 January 2004. One of the airbags (brown, lower centre right), which protected the rover during landing, is covered with dust. The rover's solar panels (black, bottom left) provide power, and at bottom centre is a sundial. The round black object and silver pole at lower centre right are the High and Low Gain Antennas for communicating with Earth. This image looks North and the horizon appears to slope because the lander is tilted. At centre left is a shallow depression, which has been named 'Sleepy Hollow' by NASA research scientists. At far right is a dune-like feature.
